One of the Military Orders introduced by the Three Hanseatic City-States of Bremen, Hamburg and Lubeck in 1915. They were the Hanseatic equivalents of the Prussian Iron Cross, and were earned through merit and bravery in war.

This is the Hamburg version of the medal, which features the Three Towered Castle arms of Hamburg at the centre. The reverse features the words "Fur Verdienst im Kriege", meaning "For Merit in War", alongside the date 1914.
